Medicine Management Device V
Summer 2015

The Challenge
To develop a novel electronic medication adherence monitoring device that is designed around the end user's (i.e., patients, clinicians, & researchers) needs and results in more comprehensive data capture.

Medicine Management Device III
Spring 2015

The Challenge
To develop a novel electronic medication adherence monitoring device that is designed around the end user's (i.e., patients, clinicians, & researchers) needs and results in more comprehensive data capture.

With the help of Precision Cincinnati, who has electrical mechanics expertise, the Live Well team worked to blend the mechanics of the device with the software actions. The team also purchased a 3D printer that helped us develop prototypes faster and more realistically. The focus was put on aesthetic and ergonomic improvements to the tray and main hub structure as well as generating different concepts for the pillbox-to-go, the pill cutter, and the pill bottle itself. In addition, the UX/UI team refined the interface based on a series of in-person interviews at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and virtual meetings with patients. After testing for the device and its interface was completed the team printed the device and then passed it on to Precision Cincinnati. They then integrated the electrical and mechanical systems and the user interface.

Medicine Management Device I
Summer 2014

On the 8th of May Live Well hosted the kick-off presentation. This meeting was attended by Kevin Hommel, a Research Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Ph. D, and Kelly LeBhun, the Clinical Research Coordinator from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Live Well staff including Executive Director Linda Dunseath and Project Manager Professor Steve Doehler as well as Graduate Students from the Master of Design program at UC DAAP: Antonio Islas, Alfredo Ruiz, Stacy He, and Luying Sun also were in attendance.

Linda Dunseath gave the initial presentation. Kevin Hommel, Ph.D then went on to explain some of the benchmarking he and his team had been doing along with some concepts developed over the years for an adherence monitor device for children.

Patients and Health Care Providers Interviews
With the help of Kelly LeBhum, the Live Well team the opportunity to conduct 1:1 interviews with patients. These interviews were done via Skype and in-home visits with different patients (parents and children) with chronic conditions to gain important insights.

The team also had the chance to interact with care providers, nurses, doctors, physiologists, and researchers in a few interviews. These healthcare workers discussed anecdotes of patients who they consider to be successful in their treatment adherence.

Back at the studio, the team synthesized data from interviews and literature reviews, which consisted of benchmarking products and reading different case studies, completed earlier. They then created scenarios with some rough ideas for concepts to explore. These scenarios were shown to some of the patients that were interviewed in order to obtain more information and guidance in the search for the best solutions.

During the Ideation Phase the team developed concepts that carried over into the refinement phase.
