At the forefront of design are the methods of Design Thinking and Design Research.
Herbert Simon simply defines design as changing existing circumstances into preferred ones. Accompanied by other scientists, he laid the foundation for Design Thinking, which we utilize today to improve the future, create solutions to challenges, innovate, and solve problems.
Raymond Loewy used the term MAYA (most advanced yet acceptable) because he believed design should not lead with technology, but should be driven by the needs and expectations of consumers.
Design Thinking can be applied to all of life’s situations. Like empathy, Design Thinking is universal.
The Loft encompasses all aspects of the Design Thinking process, both from the perspective of the Loft being created, and the Loft sessions themselves.
The Design Thinking process formed the basis for the creation of the Loft, each phase representing various semesters of work. The beginning of the project, for example, encompassed the Research Phase, in which the team completed an entire semester of research alongside key stakeholders to gain a better understanding of the perception of health and wellness. The Ideation Phase then consisted of synthesizing and translating that research to construct the physical Loft space. Another semester was required (the Refinement Stage) to build and test the Loft. And now, to date, the Loft has been functioning throughout the Implementation Phase, leading tours and hosting sessions for participants to feel engaged, inspired, and empowered to create positive change for their respective users.
The Loft is a tremendous and highly effective example of Design Thinking in the business version in that it allows corporate entities the experience of participating in the Design Thinking process to innovate and solve various challenges. During each session, the Loft guides and creates structure, and acts as a framework from which to be inspired. All in all, the experience re-frames thinking to allow participants to think like designers.
